Background

Rwanda is a verdant and beautiful country, often referred to as, “the Land of a Thousand Hills” and, “the Switzerland of Africa.” Rwanda is about the size of Vermont, but hosts a population of about ten million; its population density is the highest of any country in Africa and currently has one of the world’s highest birth rates. Unfortunately, UNICEF estimates that there are nearly one million orphans and vulnerable children; children are primarily orphaned due to poverty.

Eligibility Requirements

In most cases adoptive parents must be under age 35.  However, a judge can waive the age requirement.  In most cases couples must have been married for at least five years with no more than one previous divorce. Singles will be approved in some cases; typically only female singles are considered. Prospective adoptive parents must show financial stability typically joint income of $10,000 per family member. In most cases only families with two or fewer children will be considered.

Processing Time

Application through arriving home with child is dependent upon child request, dossier building, etc. Approximate timeframe is 12–16 months.

Age of Children Available

Children of ages between 3 months - 15 years are available, with an option to adopt a sibling group. Both healthy boys and girls are available.

Travel Requirements

Both parents are encouraged to travel; at least one parent must travel. Travel times can vary, with estimated times being 10-14 days.

Post-Adoption Paperwork

Rwanda has no post-adoption requirements.
